Hibernation Day

Yes, it’s still raining, and I’m loving it! My energy levels have been quite low today, but apart from pesky thoughts of “I really should get around to …” the dearly beloved and I are enjoying a wonderful day, starting Season 3 of Game of Thrones (yes, we’re behind) and generally just lazing about.

When you’re training hard physically, experts often suggest you incorporate “rest days” into your routine. I think it would be fair to say I’ve been training hard psychologically, so it’s been just lovely to have had the chance to lie on the carpet and lose myself in the Seven Kingdoms and their politicking for the afternoon.

What is this hard psychological work, you ask? Well, apart from ย my usual psychotherapy, there was a session with the new mental health worker, and my last session with the DBT group, and going through the process of leaving that. (Yes, a post about that will be written, in the fullness of time!)

Although I’m feeling tired, I also feel determined to continue working on my health. I feel like the vine in this picture,ย growing towards the light, using whatever supports are at hand to help reach my goal:

Today was a day to “lie fallow” and give my mind a rest, letting anxieties float free and putting stressors aside. Tomorrow, it’s back into the game of psychotherapy, followed byย the joy of visiting a friend.

    Resting is really a theme on the blogosphere today! I’ve been resting for a few weeks now, and I’m almost a bit afraid of how good it feels. I think until now I’ve been afraid to let myself act as depressed as I feel, but I think in resting properly you can really let things go. I hope so, anyway!

  2. It sounds like wonderful healing work is being done. I am glad you took a day off of healing to do a little bit of self care. We all need those sometimes. XX

    Rest is as important as the work itself. Prior to all my physical issues I was training in the gym at power-lifting and if I didn’t rest properly I wasn’t able to do as well. I unfortunately cannot rest. I have never been able to. Yoga at the moment is my favourite type of “rest”.

    We haven’t even started Game of Thrones so you are far ahead of us!

  4. I think we need those days. I’ve had two days of sickness so have spent much of it laying around. Unfortunately, my mind hasn’t been resting as much as my body. I was feeling okay this morning and thinking that work might be in the cards but the longer I am up, the worse I am feeling.

    • Gotta love G.O.T. Just watched S03E06. I know it’s weird, but for some reason I always thought the Wall was actually a cliff … which would have been very difficult for the Ancients to build, but anyway, that’s what I thought. Still, now I know I was wrong ๐Ÿ™‚

  6. I like the analogy of psychological rest days like rest days in exercise regimens. We don’t have to be pushing through great new psychological barriers each and every day. Oddly enough, that strikes me in this moment as a tremendous relief!
