Women in particular need to keep an eye on their physical and mental health, because if we’re scurrying to and from appointments and errands, we don’t have a lot of time to take care of ourselves. We need to do a better job of putting ourselves higher on our own ‘to do’ list.
– Michelle Obama
I don’t think it’s only the fact that women are busy which makes us more prone to health issues, particularly mental health difficulties. I can think of a number of factors – societal expectations, discrimination in the workplace, the heightened risk of abuse, body image issues – which make women more vulnerable than men in this area. In my experience, the ratio of females to males in private psychiatric clinics in Australia generally lies between 4:1 and 6:1 (rough figures only).
